What will space combat be like

The quasar J is 13 billion light-years away from Earth. But it still can reveal a lot about our own universe. Collisions between the Parker Solar Probe and dust are so energetic the particles burst into plasma.

A human landing was 'not grounded in technical feasibility,' NASA administrator says. Science fiction space movies can do a poor job of educating people about space. Is that realistic? In reality, a space battle is likely to look much different. With an increasing presence in space, and the potential for future conflict, is it time to think about what an actual space battle would look like? Wilson have written a paper on the topic of space battles. If past human affairs indicate the future, then the militarization of space will proceed.

Scenes from Star Wars, books, and TV shows portray a world very different from what we are likely to see in the next 50 years, if ever, given the laws of physics. But there has been some weapons-testing activity. China is working on anti-satellite weapons and has tested an anti-satellite missile. So has India. Russia is also working on anti-satellite capabilities, and the US is doing the same. The US actually destroyed one of their own satellites with a missile back in This is likely just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to future conflict in space.

None of this anti-satellite activity involved people traveling in spacecraft, and there may never be a need for crewed military spacecraft, according to the paper. In the early days of the Space Age, while the Cold War was still raging, the superpowers imagined that conflict in space would largely be an extension of Earthly conflicts.

The Soviets even designed space stations armed with a machine gun to defend against attack by American astronauts. The USA worked on similar ideas. Aligning a pair of satellites in the same position isn't impossible, but it's a tricky maneuver dependent upon precise factors and a whole lot of advanced math. But that's not to say we can't still dream of colorful, fantasy-fueled space battles erupting in exotic galaxies!

Given all of this, for engagements in space, maneuvers and actions will have to be planned far in advance, Reesman said in an interview. In a perfect world, space might be viewed as a sanctuary.

But since the mids and the advent of anti-satellite weapons in the Soviet Union and the United States, space has been treated as a contested domain by the United States, the Soviet Union, and other emerging powers. While no shooting wars have broken out in space, the ability to take down space weapons has been seen by new powers such as China in and India in as a means to demonstrate their capabilities.

In addition to ground-based missiles, the report identifies several ways in which satellites might be attacked. Radio signals can be used to jam an opponent's satellites, or spoof them by sending harmful commands. This would be an extension of electronic warfare already used in naval and air battles.
